Unscripted, But Right on Schedule
It was Saturday, the gym was done, food store run complete, and I headed home. According to my routine, the next step was the kitchen sink to clean meat for my weekly meal prep. But last Saturday was different. I said to myself, “No. I don't want to do it. I want to lay down.”
So, I gave myself permission to take a break in my regularly scheduled program. My body and mind needed rest, and on this BIG Saturday, I crawled back into bed with my hubby and took a nap. Unscripted, unprecedented and honestly, rare for me.
Can I tell you? The chicken didn't go anywhere! It was waiting for me when I got back up. Later, when I finally hit the kitchen, I was rejuvenated and ready to tackle the remainder of the day. No, I didn't finish everything on my Saturday list, but it was okay. I was rested.
Here's the truth: it's not just about loving your people well, it's also about loving YOU well.
Heart Truths:As wives, mothers, leaders, and women juggling multiple hats, we often think love looks like doing more. Loving well can also mean giving yourself permission to pause.
✔️ Loving well is saying “not now” or even “no” when your body, mind and spirit need it.
✔️ Loving well is showing yourself grace when you need to detour from your routine.
✔️ Loving well is being flexible enough to know what you need in the moment so you can show up fully later.
Maybe for you, it's pausing mid-week to take a nap, journaling instead of tackling the dishes, or stepping outside for a walk instead of another Zoom call. Whatever it looks like, rest is not selfish. It's sacred.
Loving Well in Action:So how do you start practicing this type of self -love? Here are two steps:
1. Pray – Ask God: “What do I need to stop or pause right now?” Then actually listen for His instruction.
2. Proceed – Follow through. Take the break. Lay down. Step outside. Do what's needed to recharge, so you can serve from a place of fullness, not exhaustion.
Loving well isn't just about pouring out. It's about filling back up too and rest is a part of that. So let's not forsake it! You'll be better because of it and so will your people.
Scripture Meditation“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” – Matthew 11:28
